Volvo Trucks Cutting Jobs at Virginia Plant

Changes in production strategy at Volvo Trucks North America Inc will result in the elimination of about 400 jobs at its New River Valley VA plant, said Karl-Erling Trogen, interim president and chief executive officer. Both hourly and salaried employees will be affected, and outplacement services will assist affected employees, who were scheduled to be laid off Feb 26, 2001. Volvo employs about 2,000 workers at the Virginia plant. Trogen said Volvo is refocusing its production to manufacture more daycabs because of a glut of used sleeper cabs on the market.
